Lactarius controversus

Lactarius controversus

15th November 2017, Andrew’s Wood near Shoreham
Growing in grass/leaf litter under broad leafed tree. Troop of several. Cap up to 16cm. No smell. Exuded a little milk, which tasted mild then gradually became bitter. Fat stem. Found at the entrance to Broke Hill golf course. L. controversus grows with poplar or Salix repens. I wasn't sure of the tree id at the time, but that is possible. ID is almost sure. Sporeprint White. Spores 4.5-7µ x 4.5-5.5µ.

2nd October 2015, Oaken Wood, Maidstone
Growing around tree that looks a bit like birch but could easily be a species liked by L.controversus. Many growing in a ring. Cap 4-13cm. Little smell but perhaps a hint of blue cheese? Many older ones had gills that had totally disintegrated into a kind of furry mass. These L.controversus with disintegrated gills must be infected by Hypomyces lateritius (another type of fungus). Very weird. ID is almost sure. Sporeprint white. Spores 5.5-8µ x 4.5-6µ.

18th October 2013, Broke Hill Golf Course
Cap 10-25cm. Milk taste mild then after 10 seconds becoming very hot. Spore size is much closer to Lactarius controversus than Fleecy Milkcap which has bigger spores. Huge! This could be Lactarius controversus or Fleecy Milkcap. Book says controversus grows under poplar or Salix repens and it seems to be growing under a different willow, but very unsure of my tree id. Some of them were very big, which inclines towards Fleecy Milkcap. But spore size swings it towards controversus. ID is very likely. Sporeprint white. Spores 5.5-7.5µ x 4.5-6µ. Spore size is much closer to Lactarius controversus than Fleecy Milkcap which has bigger spores.
